Lincoln Street Art Park

Capturing Beauty and Framing Specificity.

I travelled to the Lincoln Street Art Park in Detroit as one of my first intentional photo outings with my Fujifilm camera. I had not seen the park when passing by or just stumbled across its existence. I was not going for a work event or friend outing. I was looking for artistic areas to try and capture with my camera. That was the whole intention. I found this place online and decided I wanted to see what I could capture.

At first entry of the graffiti landscape of Lincoln Street, I found myself hoping to capture the mosaic, sweeping fullness of the area and work. I found this difficult. As I slowed down and allowed myself to step into the area, I was reminded that the beauty of this place was in the parts and pieces that made the whole. Not the general, but the specific. I had to look closely to find the framing I needed.

I do not think looking at big pictures verses more focused points is worse, but I have to remember that there is more than one way to capture the essence of something. I can step back or I can step forward. I will say, stepping in close allows for more intimacy and a deeper feeling. I want to be able to capture both if it is my desire, and have much more practice for doing both, but the intimate look at a place has been beautiful to explore since this outing. It can be said the true beauty is in the details.
